The kids and I were chilling upstairs in my bed watching Scooby Doo. A nice relaxing way to start out a Friday morning if I do say so myself. About 10AM, the doorbell rang. Now, I am expecting a package sometime today, but in the back of mind know that it shouldn't arrive until sometime this afternoon during the regular UPS route.
The kids and I, and Duke, bolted downstairs at the sound of the doorbell. Caleb in underpants. Lorelei in a t-shirt and underpants. Myself in my capri jammy pants (with unshaved legs of course!), a tank and a zipper front sweater. We look fabulous, let me tell you. And keep in my mind that my hair is pink. And George, he's asleep on the couch.
Duke freaks out whenever the doorbell rings. So, the kids are shouting and trying to catch his collar so he doesn't escape out the door and I'm trying to open the door enough to see who/what is at the door without letting the dog out and without showing off our gorgeous outfits, or lack of in Caleb's case.
There is a man and two adorable little girls standing at the door. I immediately spy his bible. Great! I'm dressed for this.
I have no idea what name he gave when he introduced himself and the two girls, but he wanted to invite me to church service. Of course. And he handed me a pamphlet. Of course. And all the while, I have a dog going nuts and two children screaming in the background and a "dude" sleeping on my couch. {Have I mentioned I make a fabulous impression on people?}
Thankfully, I think he realized that either A. I wasn't the church going type or B. That I didn't have time for his speech. And so after handing me the pamphlet, he and the girls made their way to the next house.
Now okay, if you really want to know, they are Jehovah's Witnesses. And honestly, it wouldn't matter if they were Buddhist, Catholic or anything else. I hate, and I do mean hate, having God and religion shoved in my face at my own house. I understand that in some faiths that this is part of how they share and spread the word that they believe. But I don't think it's right. It's like trying to sell God door-to-door. Although I'm not religious, I don't agree with that. I think if a person is really interested in finding God they'll find it in their own way and they'll seek out a person whose beliefs they are most interested in pursuing. And I think if someone asks you about what you believe that you should definitely tell them. I know that I've had plenty of conversations about beliefs and God and religion and church and all sorts of other topics. I've gone to church even. I'm even baptized. But please, don't sell me your version of God at my door. I know you exist. Really, I do. If I'm interested, I'll knock on your door and you can try to save my sorry ass. Promise.
And now, if you are really curious... As much as I do not personally like organized religion and am not at all sure that I can put any faith in something like God or a book that's been rewritten and rehashed more times than there are people in the world -- I am not against my children pursuing religion. I do offer every few months to take them to church service, to bring them to some sort of religious teaching for children or even to attend a vacation bible school. In fact, they've done all three. I would never, ever hold them back from pursuing something they were interested in or believed in. Caleb, on more than one occassion, has told me even that to make a baby you need a Mommy, a Daddy and God. So, obviously, with what little education he has in all things pertaining to God he believes that in fact God does exist. And I don't slight him for that. Or tell him he's wrong. I do tell him that I personally don't believe if he asks me, but I always tell him that he and I don't have to agree. If he believes, then that's what's right in his world. And I would do the same for Lorelei. And in fact, I think that's just how all people should be. If we all believed the same thing -- well, the world would be a very boring place.
And, I'm done.
